Configure a Cisco phone with a SIP account

How to register a Cisco phone on a Vohippo SIP account from the phone's web interface. All you need is the phone's IP address and the account's username and password, which you find in the portal.

How do I open the phone's web interface?

First check the firmware: only Cisco phones with multiplatform firmware (MPP, also called 3PCC) and SPA models register with a SIP provider. On these the web interface opens from the phone's IP address; to see every field you need admin access in advanced mode.

  • The phone and the computer must be on the same network
  • Type the phone's IP address into the browser, for example http://192.168.1.50
  • If the default password does not work, check the phone's label or the model's manual

Which fields do I fill in?

The path is Voice → Ext 1 (one Ext page per line). Fill in the fields like this, with your SIP account details:

  • Line Enable: Yes
  • Proxy: sip.vohippo.com
  • Display Name: the name to show
  • User ID: the SIP account's username
  • Password: the account's password
  • Use Auth ID: Yes, and Auth ID: the same username (on models that have the field)

SIP account on the phone

Username and password are in the portal: one account per phone, with its own channels and limits.

  • Server sip.vohippo.com, port 5060 UDP
  • Username and password of the SIP account
  • Codecs G.711 a-law, µ-law and G.722

How do I check that it is registered?

Save and wait a few seconds. The account status shows on the web interface's status page and, usually, on the phone's display.

  • Registered status: the account is live, you can make a test call
  • In the portal, under SIP accounts, the account shows as registered
  • Call a mobile phone: if you hear and are heard, you are done

What to know about Cisco phones

Menu items can change slightly between models and firmware versions: if a field is missing, look for the one with the same meaning.

  • Cisco phones with CUCM (Cisco Unified Communications Manager) firmware do not register with a SIP provider: they need multiplatform firmware
  • Moving to multiplatform firmware depends on the model and the licence: check with your Cisco reseller
  • The registration status shows on the web interface's Info or Status page

If something goes wrong

The problems are almost always the same on every brand: they are explained in full in the general VoIP phone guide.

  • Registration rejected (403): wrong username or password, often a trailing space copied by mistake
  • Registration that comes and goes: expiry too long behind a router that closes ports, try 300-600 seconds
  • One-way audio: almost always NAT, turn off the router's SIP ALG

Frequently asked questions

My Cisco has no Voice page: why?

It probably runs CUCM firmware, or you are not in advanced mode. With CUCM firmware the phone does not register with a SIP provider.

What are MPP and 3PCC firmware?

They are the names of Cisco's multiplatform firmware, the one that lets the phones register with any SIP provider.
